Published by Authority is a series of four wooden boxes, each containing a photograph and a passage of text from an important historical document called The Police Gazette, which has been in circulation since 1828. The Gazettes used to produce this work were discovered in poor condition twenty-six years ago and although offered to both the police force and several museums, there was no interest in their preservation. The work is intended to highlight the significance of these documents and aims to carefully preserve some of this information. The boxes also intend to challenge the audience’s preconceptions surrounding criminal subject matter by asking them to invent narratives which connect the photograph at the back of the box to the laser cut text on the glass at the front.
